about

Psychedelia is a timeless condition but a tarnished cliche. What better way to experience better living through chemistry than by listening to extraterrestrial sounds capable of matching the skyscraping levitation loose within your own head. But we’re a half-century beyond Woodstock and psychedelia is an algorithmic playlist, a Target lava lamp, a tie-dye shirt depicting John Mayer as a dancing skeleton.

If psychedelia is supposed to be infinite, it’s become a dreary vortex. The same recycled sounds by bands who believe that acid visions equal originality. Yet in the LA duo Pioneer11, have rocketed beyond terrestrial limitations to create “Gravitorium,” a debut that fulfills the need for new explorations without falling victim to the traps of merely aspiring to sound trippy. You can hear hints of their original influences — Radiohead, Dilla, Darkside, Four Tet and Caribou — but they’ve created something that belongs solely to them. You can also hear a Big Pun cover (RIP Christopher Rios).

If this isn’t the best album with guitars this year, it’s right up there. Psychedelia in its latest iteration, disorienting and mysterious, chill but dark, filled with all the right revelations that can’t be explained. -- Jeff Weiss (6/29/19)
